How do I know if my fuse panel is bad? ›

Usually, you will find two fuse boxes in the car. One is located under the hood and the other is found in the dashboard or near the steering wheel.

Usually, it will be in your garage or your basem*nt. Open the fuse box and look at the glass containers that hold the fuses. If you can see that the fuse is visibly broken, or there is metallic residue on the glass from the fuse blowing, you will need to replace that particular fuse.

Faulty Fuse

The car's electrical system all runs through the fuse boxes. You can replace a blown fuse but if the blown fuse is bad enough, some of the wiring might be damaged. This can prevent cars from starting. You can find the map to your vehicle's fuse box in the owners manual.

Unlike a circuit breaker, a blown fuse can't be switched back on. To fix it, you will need to replace the fuse with one of the same amperage rating (more on this below).

Your current fuse box is getting old – If your lights keep flickering or your sockets do not seem to be working as well as they should, then this is a sure sign that your fuse box is beginning to deteriorate. This often starts when the fuse box is over ten years old.

The secondary under-hood fuse box is next to the battery. To open it, push the tabs as shown. If something electrical in your vehicle stops working, check for a blown fuse first.

Depends on why your PAT testers are asking, if the equipment is blowing 3amp but not 5amp fuses, it's less of a risk having 5amp as they don't create a fire hazard. Caveat being that you have Residual Current Devices in place that eliminate any electrical hazard. If they have simply run out of 3amp then of course not.

Most vehicles have two fuse boxes, with one under the hood and the other in the cabin. You can usually find the other fuse box in the dashboard on the driver's side, but some manufacturers also place it below the glove box.

Check your garage for the circuit breaker or fuse box. It might also be in a storage room, utility room, the basem*nt, or a hallway. If you can't find your box in one of these areas, look again or see if you can spot where the power connects to your house from outside. Check for your box in the surrounding areas.

Still gripping it with the puller, hold the fuse up to the light (or a light source) and look through the translucent bodywork. You should see a thin metal wire in there. If the wire is no longer a continuous thread and appears broken or in two pieces, the fuse has indeed 'blown'.
